HATTIESBURG, Miss. ---- The UAB baseball team scored six runs off one of the top pitchers in Conference
Game two of the twinbill will start at 6:30 p.m. CT, and will be televised on Fox Sports Net with Bruce Howard (pxp) and Pat Combs (analyst) on the call.
Southern Miss (23-19, 12-5 C-USA) took little time touching up the scoreboard, as the home squad plated 13 runs over the first three frames against UAB starter Sam Kelley (3-5). The Golden Eagles' scoring spree featured a grand slam from Blake Brown and three-run homer by Mason Robbins.
After being held scoreless through the first four innings, the UAB (17-27, 3-11) crossed home three times in the fifth against USM starter Andrew Pierce (9-1). Tyler Mims, Tyler Hamby and Adam Lau all knocked in one run in the frame.
The Blazers had another three-run inning in the seventh as Lau roped a RBI double off the wall in left and Ivan De Jesus slapped a two-run single to center.
However, in the last of the seventh, USM exploded for eight more runs, including homers by Bradley Roney and Dillon Day in the inning to end the contest by way of the 15-run Conference USA mercy rule.
Hamby finished 2-for-2 with a double, run scored and one RBI, while Lau and De Jesus each knocked in two runs apiece.
USM's Pierce earned the win, yielding six runs (five earned) in 6.2 innings pitched with four strikeouts and one walk. The six runs allowed were the most given up by the right-hander all season.
Southern Miss finished with 24 total hits, featuring a perfect 6-for-6 day from Travis Creel. Robbins and Roney each collected five RBI, while Brown and Day each knocked in four.
