BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB women’s basketball team has been selected to play in the 2013 Women’s Basketball National Invitation Tournament in an announcement made by the WNIT on Monday.
The Blazers, 18-12 overall and 9-8 in Conference USA action, will play at Auburn on Wednesday. The Tigers enter the tournament with a 16-14 overall record and 5-11 mark in Southeastern Conference play.
Game time for Wednesday’s contest is scheduled to be released on Tuesday. The winner of the first-round matchup will play either Western Kentucky or East Carolina in the second round on March 23, 24 or 25.
“I am extremely proud for our team on being selected to the prestigious WNIT,” UAB head coach Audra Smith said. “Our women fought hard all season and are very deserving of a postseason bid.”
UAB makes its third appearance in the WNIT – its first since 2006-07, when the Blazers made it to the second round. The Green and Gold fell at Auburn, 74-60, on March 18, 2007 to end the 2006-07 season 19-13 overall and 12-4 in C-USA action.
The Blazers were also selected to the WNIT in 2000-01 and made it all the way to the Elite 8 before falling at New Mexico, 77-55. UAB made it to the National Women’s Invitational Tournament in consecutive seasons from 1990-92.
This season’s bid is UAB’s eighth postseason berth all-time. The Blazers made it all the way to the NCAA Sweet 16 in 2000 and were most recently the 2011 WBI Champions.
The 2013 WNIT will feature first-round games from March 20-22, followed by second round contests on March 23-25. Round No. 3 will be held on March 27-29 with the quarterfinals set for March 30-April 1.
Following a semifinal round that will run from April 3-4, the championship game will be played on April 6 at 2 p.m. CT.
