UAB Loses 3-1 To Tulane In C-USA Tourney

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - The UAB volleyball recorded a first set victory, but dropped the final three sets in a 3-1 loss to Tulane in the 2013 Conference USA Tournament quarterfinals on Friday night. With the loss, UAB finished the 2013 season with a 21-14 overall mark.
The Blazers jumped out to an early lead in its quarterfinal match against second-seeded Tulsa (27-3). UAB recorded a 25-19 victory in the first set behind five kills from junior Sarah Rishell.
The second-seeded Green Wave rebounded with a 25-20 win in the second set and 25-22 victory in the third frame to take a commanding 2-1 lead. The Blazers would not pack it in the 2013 Conference USA Tournament, jumping out to a 15-7 advantage in the fourth set. Tulane would eventually recapture the lead and take the deciding fourth set, 25-23.
Four Blazers recorded double-digit kills on the night. Rishell led the way with 14 kills against Rice. Senior Ally Slaughter, junior Kiriana Hirini, and freshman Gabby Deshotel each had at least 10 kills, as well. All-Conference USA honoree Becca Howard led the way for the Blazers with 50 assists in her final match in a Green and Gold uniform. 2013 Conference USA Libero of the Year Rachel Fairbanks tallied a team-high 15 digs in her final match as a member of the UAB volleyball team.
This marked the second consecutive year that the UAB volleyball team has recorded a victory in the Conference USA Tournament. In addition, for the 18th time in school history the Blazers recorded at least 20 victories.
