VESTAVIA HILLS, Ala. - Senior Wilson McDonald collected his first individual title of his collegiate career on Tuesday as he took home individual medalist honors at the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate. McDonald recorded a 202 (-8) for the three-round event at the Old Overton Golf Club.
"It's a big relief," McDonald stated. "It's one of the biggest goals I have had since I was a freshman here. To finally get it is a big accomplishment for me."
McDonald became the first Blazer to claim individual medalist honors since teammate Sam Love won the 2011 Invitational at the Ocean Course.
Spearheaded by McDonald's effort, the UAB men's golf team finished in third place at the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate. As a team, UAB registered an 846 (+6) for the tournament at the par-70, 7,204 yard course.
"We played a really good round today," head coach Alan Murray stated. "I was really proud of how they played, especially Wilson winning an individual title. I couldn't be happier for him. In a deep field of this quality, that is impressive. The guy works hard. He has a great attitude."
McDonald, fellow senior Thomas Sutton, and junior Paul Dunne all were even par on the final day of competition. Dunne finished the tournament in 215 strokes (+5), well enough for 18th place. For the second consecutive event, Dunne recorded a top 20 finish. Sutton scored a 224 (+14) at the Old Overton Golf Club.
Love was one-over par on Tuesday. The Trussville, Ala. native scored a 213 (+3), good enough for 12th place. It marked his third straight top 20 finish.
Rounding out the Blazers' lineup was sophomore Martin Rohwer. Rohwer was two-over par for the final round of competition. He finished the event in 218 strokes (+8).
The UAB men's golf team is back in action on Monday, Oct. 21 at the Georgetown Intercollegiate, its final event of the fall season.
