VESTAVIA HILLS, Ala. – Senior Wilson McDonald sits in first place on the individual leaderboard heading into Tuesday’s third and final round at the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate. McDonald carded a 132 (-8) for Monday’s two rounds of play at the Old Overton Country Club.
“Wilson played super,” head coach Alan Murray stated. “He drives the ball great. In the morning, he only hit nine greens. He obviously putted well. He was able to save par. Fantastic scoring, to be leading after 36 in a really strong field, it is very impressive.”
As a team, UAB is in fourth place after two rounds of competition. The Blazers registered a 565 (+5) on Monday and are 12 strokes behind tournament leader, Alabama.
“I am very proud of the boys,” added Murray. “They played great at a really good golf course. The conditions were tough, there was a little bit of wind gusting all of time. The lads hung in there well. We are right there with everyone else.”
McDonald continued his successful fall season by shooting a combined eight-under par on Monday. The Mobile, Ala. native stormed out to the top of the leaderboard after recording an opening-round 65 (-5), his best 18-hole score of his UAB career. McDonald came back in the afternoon with a 67 (-3), the second-best second round score among the 60-player field. He owns a four-stroke lead heading into Tuesday’s finale.
Fellow senior Sam Love was the team’s second lowest scorer, shooting a 142 (+2) on the day. Love rebounded from an opening-round 72 (+2), firing a 72 (E) in the afternoon. He is currently in a tie for 14th place.
Junior Paul Dunne was not too far behind Love, finishing in 145 (+5) strokes. Dunne is currently one place out of the top 20. One stroke behind him was sophomore Martin Rohwer, whose second-round 71 (+1) was the fourth-best round by a Blazer at the par 70, 7,204 yard course.
Redshirt senior Thomas Sutton completed the Green and Gold lineup, recording a 154 (+14) for the two rounds of play.
“Hopefully, we can have a good day tomorrow,” concluded Murray. “We will try to make up some ground. We are pleased with how they have done so far, but there are still 18 more to go. We want to try to finish strong. We haven’t played as well in the last round in our first two tournaments. We want to make amends for that tomorrow.”
UAB will be back in action tomorrow morning with the final round of the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate.
