BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB women’s soccer team defeated conference foe East Carolina 3-2 on a soggy Sunday afternoon at West Campus Field. The Blazers improved to 9-3-1 overall and 2-1-1 in Conference USA, while ECU fell to 4-7-2 (1-3-0 C-USA).
“We controlled the tempo today,” said head coach Harold Warren. “Controlling the tempo is everything. We took care of the ball well, and if we can take care of the ball then the opponent is not dangerous. Obviously we scored goals. Jasmine Kauka did a good job scoring two goals for us today.”
The Blazers were down early after the Pirates netted the first goal of the game off of a corner kick in the 23rd minute. It was not long after that UAB got on the board with a goal from senior Jasmine Kauka. She scored her second goal of the season off of a free kick, sending the teams into halftime tied 1-1.
Shortly out of the break, redshirt freshman Kasey Johnson gave the Green and Gold the lead after collected a rebound shot and sending it past ECU’s keeper to make it 2-1 UAB. Senior Amy Harrison tallied the assist on the play.
In the 70th minute, Kauka was awarded another free kick that she sent into the goal to give UAB a 3-1 lead. Her second goal of the game would prove to be the eventual game-winner for the Blazers.
East Carolina added another score after Lana Spitler found the goal to bring them within one. UAB was able to hold the Pirates off though for the remainder of the game and earn the 3-2 victory.
“We made it interesting,” remarked Warren. “ECU is a dangerous team. It has always been a tight game between these two teams, but glad we came out with the win today.”
The Blazers will have a week off before they return to West Campus Field to host FIU on Sunday, Oct. 13 at 1 p.m. CT.
