NORFOLK, Va. – The UAB women’s soccer team (10-5-1) scored twice within six minutes in the first half, and held the Lady Monarchs scoreless to pick up a 2-0 win over Old Dominion (1-10-2) at the ODU Soccer Complex on Sunday.
“We had a tremendous first half,” head coach Harold Warren said. “I thought we did very well, and scored two nice goals. In the second half we sort of got off our game but you’ve got to give credit to Old Dominion; they came out and played really well in the second half and were all over us.”
The Blazers and Lady Monarchs exchanged shots to open the match, but UAB broke through in the 34th minute when Johanna Liney found the net on an Amy Harrison assist to take a 1-0 advantage.
Six minutes later the Blazers increased their lead to 2-0 when Kasey Johnson scored on an assist from Kimberly Fincher.
Johnson and Sam Bradford each finished with four shots for the Blazers, while Fincher took three. Goalkeeper Courtnie Northern played all 90 minutes in-goal for UAB, and picked up her second shutout on the year.
“We were able to hold on and came together defensively and did a good job, so it was good to get a shutout and a win.”
The Blazers return to action Friday at West Campus Field in a Conference USA match against Tulsa. Kick is set for 7:30 p.m.
