BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB men's golf team finished in second place in its annual home tournament, the 2013 Shoal Creek Intercollegiate, hosted by Graeme McDowell, on Tuesday at the Shoal Creek Golf and Country Club. The Blazers registered an 848 (-16) for the three-round event, finishing six strokes behind tournament champion Memphis.
"Obviously, we are disappointed not to win," head coach Alan Murray stated. "But it was far more good than bad from our point of view. Memphis was hot from the get-go. The guys hung in there well. I am really proud of the effort they put in. I am disappointed not to win, but with the round Memphis played, they deserved it. You have to tip your hat to them."
Behind a 14-under third round, Memphis stormed to the team title. The Tigers scored an 842 (-22), a Shoal Creek Intercollegiate record. Memphis freshman Lars Van Meijel and Ole Miss junior Blake Morris shared individual medalist honors. Each golfer recorded a 208 (-8) for the tournament, also an event record.
Senior Sam Love, sophomore Martin Rohwer, and redshirt senior Thomas Sutton each were even-par for the final round of play. Rohwer scored a 214 (-2) for the tournament, earning his first top 10 of the season with a ninth-place finish. Love and Sutton each shot a 215 (-1), tying for 12th place.
Junior Paul Dunne and senior Wilson McDonald were four-over for Tuesday's round. McDonald was the top Blazer finisher, recording a 212 (-4) to finish in sixth place. It marked his second straight top 10 finish of 2013. Dunne was one-over par for the event, finishing in 20th place.
Sophomore Will Cannon tallied a final-round 72 (E) as an individual. Cannon finished 11-over par. Redshirt sophomore Ryan Davies was one-over par on Wednesday and was 12-over for the event. Freshman Henry James scored a 232 (+16) for the event. Davies and James both competed as individuals, as well.
"We've been in contention twice now," Murray concluded. "We haven't won either of them, but I think it will help us going forward. We are definitely headed in the right direction. We are excited to get going next week at the Jerry Pate. It's a great field, so hopefully we can play well again and try to beat some of the best teams in the country."
The Blazers are back in action next week at the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate. The event, held at Old Overton in Birmingham, will run from Monday, Oct. 7 through Tuesday, Oct. 8.
