BIRMINGHAM, Ala.--The UAB football team practiced for just over an an hour in shorts and shells on Thursday afternoon in preparation for Saturday's Conference USA opener against Tulsa.
This weekend marks the Blazers' first game at Legion Field since the home opener on Sept. 1 against Troy.
"These games definitely didn't help our schedule because we haven't won a game yet, but I think it did help us realize and get closer to figuring out who we are as a football team," head coach Garrick McGee said. "That was the best part about the schedule we've played so far. At this point, we know who we are as a team. We understand how to concentrate, how to focus, how hard you have to play for 60 minutes to even consider winning."
One of the biggest challenges facing the Blazers this weekend will be the Tulsa defense, which is ranked as one of the best throughout Conference USA.
"I think that they have a really good football coach and a very experienced team," McGee said. "They've won a lot of football games, so they know how to compete, to win. They have a lot of confidence in themselves, they're explosive on offense and they can score a lot of points. They present a lot of challenges for our football team, we are prepared, we understand their schemes, where they're going, and we're looking forward to Saturday."
Saturday's game, which kicks off at 2 p.m., will air locally on WUHT-FM 107.7 with David Crane (play-by-play), John Whitcomb (analyst) and Sam Miller (sidelines) on the call.
