BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB football team continued to concentrate on its gameplan for the Conference USA opener this Saturday vs. Tulsa with a spirited two hour practice on Wednesday afternoon. The Blazers worked out in shorts and shells at the on-campus practice facility.
The offensive and defensive teams separated on Wednesday as both squads fine-tuned their respective gameplans for Saturday's contest. The Blazers (0-3) will be looking to open league play with a win for the first time since the 2009 season (defeated Rice, 44-24, in season opener).
UAB head coach Garrick McGee addressed the media following the session and stressed that his team's mindset is to simply improve each week, especially the continued improvement on the offensive side of the ball.
"We’ve just got to continue to get better," McGee said. "We have to continue to concentrate on ways to attack the defense, continue to focus because a lot goes into our offense. We expect a lot of (on-field) calls from our players. Our quarterbacks make checks. There’s just a lot that goes into our offense. We’ve got to concentrate to be good."
One of the more consistent areas on the offense has been the play of the Blazers' wide receivers. The corp has continued to make plays and be dangerous throughout the first three contests this season.
"It’s a group effort," McGee said. "We play a lot of receivers in the games. We’ll continue to plug away, play a little different personnel groupings. We have more weapons so we’ll just continue to plug guys out there."
Saturday’s game, which kicks off at 2 p.m., will air locally on WUHT-FM 107.7 with David Crane (play-by-play), John Whitcomb (analyst) and Sam Miller (sidelines) on the call.
