Volleyball Falls To Bowling Green In Four Sets

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. ---- The UAB volleyball team posted three players with double figure kills, but Bowling Green slid past the Blazers, 3-1 (26-28, 20-25, 30-28, 22-25) on Friday afternoon at the Mackey Arena.
UAB (5-7) looks to get back to its winning ways, by taking on the Active Ankle Tournament host and 14th-ranked Purdue Boilermakers tonight at 7:30 p.m. ET. The Blazers round out tournament action on Saturday against Jacksonville State.
Sam Serley continues to have an outstanding senior season in the front row for the Green and Gold, putting away a team-best 14 kills on 29 swings. For the match, the Nashville, Tenn., native committed only three errors for a .379 hitting percentage. In addition, Serley collected three block assists for a total of 15.5 points.
Kate Morrell posted a double-double, totaling 11 kills and 10 digs, while fellow outside hitter Ally Slaughter spiked 10 kills of her own in the loss.
Also producing in the front row were Kiriana Hirini and Michele Simmons. Hirini hit a blistering .429 (7k-1e-14ta), while Simmons slammed down eight kills and swatted six block assists.
In the back row, Rachel Fairbanks produced a 21-dig outing, marking her fourth 20-plus dig performance of the season.
The match was back in forth in three of the four sets as a total of 21 ties and 10 lead changes took place.
Serley connected for six of her 14 kills in the opening frame, but as a team UAB hit just .105 as Bowling Green (3-6) squeaked by in extra points, 28-26. The Blazers held a slim 26-25 lead, but the Falcons tallied three unanswered points to claim the opening frame.
BGSU captured the second frame, winning wire-to-wire, 25-20, despite the Blazers hitting .364 as a club. In the set, the Falcons countered with a .432 attacking percentage of their own in the stanza.
Following the match intermission, UAB answered by holding off BGSU, 30-28, in the third frame, led by three kills each from Kirsten Gallagher, Simmons and Slaughter.
Unfortunately, momentum did not follow the Blazers into what proved to be the last set of the match, as the Falcons clipped the Blazers, 25-22.
BGSU was led by Danielle Tonyan (18 kills) and Lindsay Butterfield (17 kills) on offense as both players hit above .360 for the match. Setter Laura Avila posted a double-double, dishing out a match-best 60 assists to go along with 10 digs.
