BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- The UAB baseball program will be making its second appearance in the NCAA Tournament when it takes on regional No. 1-seed Florida State Friday at 6:00 p.m. in the first round of the Tallahassee Regional.
The NCAA announced the 64-team tournament field on Monday. Mississippi State (39-22), the No. 2 seed, and Samford (39-21), the region's No. 3 seed, round out the field at FSU's Dick Howser Stadium. The two teams of Bulldogs will open regional play Friday at Noon.
The Blazers (32-28) punched their ticket to the 2012 NCAA Championship by winning the Conference USA title Sunday at Pearl, Miss. With the automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament at stake, UAB shut out Memphis, 5-0, to earn its first NCAA Championship appearance since the 1991 season.
"I couIdn't be happier for this group of young men," said UAB head coach Brian Shoop, in his sixth season at the helm of the Blazers' program. "They are a special group and have shown a lot of character and heart this season. I know they're excited and I'm excited. It's a special thing to be one of 64 left and get to play again this weekend."
The Blazers' only other appearance in the NCAA Tournament was in 1991 when they played in the Austin Regional and went 1-2, losing to host Texas (16-3) and defeating Rutgers (10-9), before falling to Oklahoma State (8-7 in 10 innings).
UAB's 32 victories this season are the most for the Blazers since the 1996 campaign when they finished with a record of 33-25.
The 64-team NCAA Tournament field is made up of 16 regionals, each featuring four teams, playing a double-elimination format. All 16 regionals are slated to be conducted from Friday, June 1, to Monday, June 4 (if necessary).
