Jeff Schalk Named To C-USA All-Freshman Team

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ---- UAB baseball player Jeff Schalk was named to the Conference USA All-Freshman Team, announced by the league office on Tuesday. A Blazer has been named to the all-freshman squad in five of the past six seasons.
Schalk put forth an impressive first season donning the Green and Gold, hitting .286 with two homers, 21 RBI and reaching base at a .378 clip.
His numbers were even better in league play, where he hit a team-best .309, scored 12 runs and walked (14) more than he struck out (11). Against C-USA arms, Schalk collected nine multi-hit games, including a trio of three-hit contests.
In conference action, Schalk reached base in 22 of 24 games and recorded an on-base percentage of .398.
Two of his more memorable games came against then No. 14 UCF and Houston. In both contests, Schalk went 3-for-5 with a homer and two RBI.
Schalk finished second on the Blazers in hits (57) and walks (28) and his 70 total bases ranked third.
The Blazers are set to compete against the UCF Knights at the Conference USA Championship presented by Trustmark on Thursday at Trustmark Park. First pitch is set for 11 a.m. CT and can be listened to on WJOX-AM 690.
