BIRMINGHAM, Ala. –The UAB track and field team has signed Breona Humphrey to the 2012-13 roster, head coach Kurt Thomas announced Wednesday.
Humphrey is a native of Hoover, Ala. and attends Hoover High School. She will compete in the 400 and 200 meters.
“I’m really excited to have Breona come run for UAB,” Thomas said. “She is a very talented young lady, and is the type of person and athlete you want to coach. She is a hard worker, and is very motivated and talented. You can’t replace those qualities.
“She is a proven winner, being a state champion individually and as a team at Hoover High School. I’m looking forward to coaching her next year.”
The Hoover senior recently became the 2012 state champion in the outdoor 6A 400 meters, crossing the line in 58.69. She helped lead the Bucs to the 2012 outdoor state title.
She ran a personal-record 57.24 in the 2012 outdoor 400 meters 6A Sectional and was the 2012 indoor 400-meter state runner up.
Humphrey’s mother, the former Barbara May, holds the Blazers’ school record in the outdoor 400 meters, which has stood the test of time for 24 years (1988, 53.30).
