BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ---- The UAB baseball team recently announced the addition of right-handed pitcher Cory Eller from Niceville, Fla., to the 2013 signing class.
“We are pleased to announce Cory as our first signee of the spring,” head coach Brian Shoop said. “His coach, Cory Hamrick played for me at Birmingham-Southern., in fact he caught the last out of our national championship team. Coach Hamrick thought Cory would be a perfect match for our program.”
Eller, who attends Niceville High School, joins Nick Altobella, Adam Lamar, Adam Lau and Perry Rigby as incoming freshmen for the 2012-13 academic year at UAB and will play for head coach Brian Shoop.
In his senior season, Eller has been a standout on the mound posting a 3.12 ERA with 27 strikeouts and 10 walks in 33.0 total innings. His numbers were even more impressive in conference play, posting a 1.50 ERA in 18.0 innings with 14 strikeouts. Eller’s WHIP (walks and hits per innings pitched) was just 0.80 against league opponents.
At Niceville High School under the watch of head coach Hamrick, Eller also was a team captain and played the outfield. He hit .375 as a junior with a homer and five doubles.
“He is a great athlete, has a tremendous coachable attitude, plays with tremendous energy, has a loose arm, a competitive spirit and we really see a bright future for Cory at UAB,” Shoop said. “Cory’s fastball has a lot of natural arm side run and he also has the makings of a special breaking ball which will give him a chance to pitch early in his Blazer career.”
Eller earned recognition as an Under Armour Preseason All-American and was named the top overall prospect and top pitcher at the Under Armour Baseball Factory Showcase in Pensacola, Fla.
At the Under Armour All-American Tournament, Eller picked up honorable mention accolades and was also selected to play in the Subway East vs. West All-Star game at the University of West Florida.
