For the second straight week, closer Ryan Nance earned both a win and a save over a seven-day stretch. He picked up the save last Wednesday vs. Jacksonville State by pitching a scoreless ninth to preserve a one-run victory.
Saturday's 2-1 win in 11 innings over Utah marked the third walk-off victory for the Blazers this season, all of which have come at home. Second baseman Keith DePew put down a suicide squeeze bunt single in the bottom of the 11th with the bases loaded to bring home the winning run.
Right-hander Chase Mallard blanked Utah over the final 5.1 innings to earn the victory on Sunday. For the season, Mallard has pitched 11.2 innings and as yet to allow an earned run. He has only given up three hits, all singles, and holding opponents to a .079 batting average against him. Over his five total appearances, Mallard has tallied 12 strikeouts to just two free passes.
On offense, Jeff Schalk leads the Blazers with 12 hits, while he has knocked in four runs and owns a batting average of .308.
Southpaw starter David Hayes will make his second start of the season when he toes the rubber for the Blazers vs. Troy. In two total outings thus far, Hayes has pitched 4.0 innings, giving up three earned runs and six hits, while striking out two.
