BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- The UAB men's tennis team has a busy weekend ahead as the Blazers will play three matches in three days as they play host to the Conference USA Shootout at George Ward Park.
The Blazers (13-4) will be joined in the four-team field by Southern Miss, Tulane and East Carolina. UAB's first match will be Friday when the Blazers take on ECU in a contest that has been moved up to 1:00 p.m. CT because of the chance for bad weather.
The Blazers, who are coming off a runner-up finish at last weekend's Boise State Spring Break Classic, will also play Tulane (Saturday at 2:00 p.m.) and Southern Miss (Sunday at 2:00 p.m.) in the three-day event.
UAB is ranked No. 67 in this week's ITA (Intercollegiate Tennis Association) rankings. The Blazers' four losses have all come at the hands of ranked teams (No. 18 Tulsa, No. 28 Florida State, No. 37 Boise State and No. 38 Vanderbilt).
ECU enters Friday's match vs. UAB with a 12-6 record. The Pirates defeated Richmond last Saturday, 4-3, in their last action. Tulane has a record of 9-7 after Tuesday's 6-1 victory over Nicholls State.
Southern Miss is 8-11 after losing to Nevada (4-3) at the Boise State tournament last weekend. However, the Golden Eagles have been ranked as high as No. 65 nationally this season.
Much of UAB's success this season can be attributed to its success in doubles. The Blazers have combined for a 31-14 (.689) doubles record in dual matches this season. UAB is 58-35 in singles play.
