LEXINGTON, Ky. – Sophomore Kristen McGrath’s two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth inning lifted the UAB softball team to a 3-1 victory over N.C. State on Saturday to remain undefeated in the University of Kentucky tournament.
The Blazers (14-10) earned the top seed of the tournament and will play the loser of the UMKC vs. Kentucky game at 3 p.m. ET. Live stats will be available for that contest on www.UABSports.com.
UAB scored one run in the first inning. Leadoff hitter Whitney Fletcher singled and moved to second on a text book sacrifice bunt by Catherine Crawford. Kayla Orr and Mandy Lowman each singled to load the bases for K. McGrath, who executed a sacrifice fly to score Fletcher.
N.C. State answered in the top of the second with a solo-shot over the right field wall off the bat of Bethaney Wells.
The game remained knotted at one, until the sixth inning. With one out, Lowman singled to center. K. McGrath crushed her first pitch over the center field wall to give UAB the 3-1 lead.
The Blazers outhit the Wolfpack, 7-2, and used 14 players in the win.
Lannah Campbell (6-4) earned the win for UAB, after relieving starter Lauren Webster. Webster pitched the first five innings, sacrificing just two hits and striking out five batters. Campbell pitched the remaining two innings, holding the Wolfpack scoreless.
Emily Weiman (8-10) was tagged with the loss. She allowed three earned runs and struck out two batters with no walks.
