Baseball Plays At Alabama State Tuesday

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ---- The UAB baseball team will head to Alabama State for a midweek contest on Tuesday. First pitch is slated for 4 p.m. CT at the Wheeler Watkins Baseball Complex.

INSIDE THE SERIES
UAB holds a commanding 18-1 record in the all-time series with the Hornets dating back to 1989. The two teams last squared off on March 30, 2010 at Young Memorial Field. UAB has won the last 13 meetings.
LAST MEETING
In the last game between the two teams in 2010, UAB won by a score of 16-6 at Young Memorial Field.
The Blazers used a 10-run third inning to take an early lead and cruise to victory. Jacob German started at catcher in the contest and knocked in two, while scoring two more in the win.
SCOUTING UAB
UAB captured the season opener at No. 16 Clemson last Friday, before dropping a doubleheader to the Tigers to close out the week 1-2.
Despite falling in the series, UAB outhit the nationally ranked Tigers, 28 to 22, which included nine doubles - two each from Coy Arrowood, Michael Busby and German. UAB hit .283 as a team for the series, while holding Clemson to a .247 average.
The pitching staff received two excellent starts from Dillon Napoleon and Michael Busby. The duo combined to toss 13.1 innings, allow just two earned runs on nine hits, with only three of the hits going for extra bases. Napoleon earned the victory in game one, while Busby did not figure in the decision in the final contest of the series.
SCOUTING ALABAMA STATE
The Hornets enter the midweek contest with a 0-3 record after dropping all three contests in Houston, Texas at the Urban Invitational played at Minute Maid Park.
Manny Rodriguez was the hot hitter for Alabama State at the tournament, finishing 5-for-12 (.417) with a double, homer and three RBI at the catcher position.
Overall, ASU struggled at the plate as a team hitting .188 (19-for-101) and committed nine errors in the field for a .929 fielding percentage.
NAPOLEON EARNS WEEKLY AWARD
RHP Dillon Napoleon earned Conference USA Pitcher of the Week announced by the league on Monday.
Napoleon put forth an excellent season debut on the mound as UAB defeated No. 16 Clemson, 2-1, on the road to start the 2012 campaign.
In the victory, Napoleon held the Tigers' prolific lineup to one run (earned) on four hits over 7.0 innings. The right-hander kept the Tigers off balance all night and forced the home squad to strand seven base runners.
During his start, Napoleon induced 15 fly outs, four groundouts and added a strike out, while retiring Clemson in order in three of his seven innings of work to earn the win.
GERMAN GETS IT GOING
Jacob German hit .571 in the Clemson series and reached base in six of eight plate appearances. He tied a career-high with three hits in the win over the Tigers last Friday.
MIMS & MORSE MAKE THE MOST
In the 2-1 win at Clemson, Matt Morse and Tyler Mims drove in both runs on sac flies. Both RBI were the first of each of their careers in Green and Gold.
BUSBY PRODUCES ON THE MOUND, AT THE PLATE
In the second game of the doubleheader on Saturday, Michael Busby produced on the mound and at the plate. Busby pitched a career-high 6.1 innings, allowing one earned run on five hits in a no decision. At the plate he went 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
UAB outhit Clemson 28 to 22 for the series, but was outscored 14 to 7.
