BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The UAB women's basketball game Sunday against Marshall is designated as the Blazers' Play 4Kay game for breast cancer awareness.
Fans are encouraged to wear pink to the game, which is scheduled for a 2 p.m. CT tipoff at Bartow Arena. The contest will also serve as the Blazers' Pack the House game in conjunction with the NCAA program aimed at increasing attendance at women's basketball games across the country.
All kids will be admitted for free Sunday, and the first 1,000 fans will receive a free pink shaker. Breast cancer survivors are especially invited to attend and be part of this annual event.
Play 4Kay, a national initiative of the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) formerly known as Pink Zone, seeks to raise awareness and funds for cancer research on the court, across campuses and in communities.
The late Kay Yow, former NC State head women's basketball coach, served as the catalyst for Play 4Kay after her third recurrence of breast cancer in 2006. Yow was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 1987 and passed away on Jan. 24, 2009.
The UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center will be on hand Sunday to distribute information on breast cancer and to accept donations for the Gene Bartow Fund for Cancer Research. For more information, or to purchase tickets, call 975-UAB1 or visit the online ticket office.
Halftime of Sunday's game will feature a special performance by the UAB Golden Girls with members of the UAB men's soccer team.
UAB sororities are also doing their part to raise money by participating this week in a Penny War competition. Collection jars are set up around campus with all the proceeds going to benefit the Gene Bartow Fund.
