HOOVER, Ala. ---- The UAB baseball program took part in the Alabama Sports Writers Association college baseball media day on Monday morning at Regions Park.
Head coach Brian Shoop, entering his sixth season at the helm of the Blazers' program, spoke with local media about the upcoming 2012 season.
"Opening season is great when everyone is excited, optimistic and hopeful about what is to come," Shoop said. "I think we are right in the mix and can tee it up against anybody and have a chance."
Joining Shoop at media day was senior right-handed pitcher/infielder Michael Busby and senior infielder Patrick Palmeiro.
"(Last season's ending in the playoffs) is something through the offseason that has driven me and everybody else on the team," Busby said. "To be that much better so this year we can go that extra inch to get to a regional."
Other schools that were in attendance included: Alabama, Auburn, Jacksonville State, Samford, Troy and West Alabama.
UAB opens the 2012 campaign on the road this Friday at 4 p.m. ET at Doug Kingsmore Stadium. The Blazers are coming off their third straight winning season after posting a 29-28 mark a year ago.
