UAB Falls, 5-4, To No. 24 Louisville

MIAMI, Fla. – The UAB softball team fell to No. 24 Louisville, 5-4, in its first of two games on Saturday at the FIU Combat Classic in Miami, Fla.
The Blazers are 1-1 on the season after defeating UMass, 3-2, on Friday. Louisville improves to 3-0.
In the top of the first, UAB senior catcher Mandy Lowman rocketed a two-run homer over the left field wall, scoring Catherine Crawford who walked to first base. The hit marked Lowman’s second homerun in as many games.
The Cardinals evened the score in the bottom of the first after Katelyn Mann ripped a two-run homer, scoring Taner Fowler who was on first.
Louisville added an insurance run in the second inning on a homerun off the bat of Maggie Ruckenbrod.
UAB regained the lead in the fifth inning. Senior Erica Sisson walked to first and Maegan Hornsby entered the game as her pinch runner. With two batters out, junior Whitney Fletcher singled to centerfield advancing Hornsby to second. The Cardinals’ centerfielder made an error, which put Hornsby on third base and Fletcher on second.
Crawford scored Hornsby on a single to shortstop, tying the score at three, and Fletcher hustled to third. With runners on the corners, Kayla Orr singled to right field sending Fletcher home. Lowman walked on the next at bat, loading the bases. Kristen McGrath struck out to end the inning, but UAB took the lead, 4-3.
Louisville answered right back with a two-run homer from Ruckenbrod on a Lannah Campbell offering. She scored Keller who singled to left center field.
Campbell (0-1) suffered the loss for UAB. Junior Lauren Webster pitched the first 3.0 innings and Campbell entered the game for the next 3.0 innings.
Chelsea Leonard (1-0) was credited with the win for the Cardinals. Leonard came into the game for Tori Collins. Collins pitched 4.2 innings, allowing four earned runs and walking three batters.
UAB returns to the diamond later today with a 3 p.m. ET matchup against Illinois.
