UAB Women's Basketball Holds Off High Point, 58-53

HIGH POINT, N.C. - Junior forward Karisma Chapman scored a game-high 17 and the UAB women's basketball team forced a season-high 26 turnovers in the 58-53 win against High Point Tuesday at the Millis Center.
The Blazers, now 7-1 on the year, held off a 9-0 Panther rally in the final 10 minutes to pick up the victory after building as much as an eight-point advantage in the first half.
"Credit High Point for really bringing it to us tonight," head coach Audra Smith said. "This team was the runner up in its conference (Big South) last season and will be a force in that league again this year. To beat them on the road is a good win for our program."
After the Blazers were able to build a 36-29 lead with 15:35 to go in the game, High Point rallied to take a 38-36 advantage off a layup from Lindsay Puckett.
The Panthers would lead only once the rest of the way as UAB used a stiff defensive effort to force High Point into 26 turnovers, including 12 in the second half.
UAB led by as many as eight points in the game with the score at 19-11 with 6:36 to go in the first half. The lead changed hands four times on Tuesday, while the score was tied on seven different occasions.
The Blazers defeated High Point despite a double-double from Panther Cheyenne Parker, who tallied 17 points and 19 rebounds. UAB junior guard Amber Jones added 16 points to Chapman's 17, while senior forward Michaelea Kleist scored eight on the night.
High Point outrebounded the Blazers, 47-33, including a 21-11 advantage on the offensive glass. Meanwhile, UAB scored 16 fastbreak points compared to just two from the Panthers.
The Blazers now travel to George Mason on Sunday for a 1 p.m. CT tip.
