BIRMINGHAM, Ala.--The UAB men's soccer team will play in its final match of the regular season on Wednesday when it travels to Memphis, Tenn., to take on the Memphis Tigers. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. CT at the Mike Rose Soccer Complex.
Last week, UAB (9-5-2, 4-3-0 C-USA) defeated UCF in a high-scoring showdown in Orlando, Fla. In the 4-3 victory, freshman Karl Chesterscored a pair of goals late in the game to ensure a spot for the squad in the Blazer-hosted 2012 Conference USA Men's Soccer Championship at Regions Park in Hoover, Ala., Nov. 7-11.
Memphis (6-6-3, 2-2-2) wrapped up its road schedule last week with matches at UCF and Florida International. The Tigers battled UCF to a 3-3 tie at the end of regulation before the Knights scored the golden goal in the 101st minute.
Last Saturday, the Tigers and Florida International battled to a 1-1 tie to go into overtime, and scored a goal with seconds to go to win 2-1. Sophomore Benjamin Closanski scored both Memphis goals.
Junior Mark Sherrod leads Memphis with nine goals and four assists for 22 points on the season, while junior Liam Collins holds a team-high seven assists.
In 2011, UAB defeated Memphis 1-0, courtesy of a penalty kick in the 90th minute of the match.
