BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- The UAB women's basketball team will take the floor for the first time for the 2012-13 season Sunday when the Blazers play host to Brewton-Parker in an afternoon exhibition game.
Gametime at Bartow Arena is 2:00 p.m. CT.
Head coach Audra Smith is anxious to see her team against some outside competition.
"I am very excited about what the season has to bring," said Smith, whose UAB team was third in a preseason Conference USA vote of the league's head coaches.
"We have some great returners coming back along with some unbelievable freshmen. I am proud of how hard they are working and looking forward to what they will bring to the table."
Leading the returners is junior forward Karisma Chapman, a preseason all-conference selection who averaged 13.8 points and 5.1 rebounds last season.
Amber Jones, a senior guard, also returns for the Blazers after averaging 12.9 points and 3.7 boards in 2011-12. Both Chapman and Jones were second-team All-Conference USA choices last season.
UAB used a stingy defense last season to yield only 49.1 points per game, third-best in the country, en route to finishing with a 19-11 record.
