BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ---- Sam Serley of the UAB volleyball team was recently named Student Athlete of the Week for the Blazers, due to her outstanding achievements both on the court and as a student.
Serley, a product of Nashville, Tenn., has been a standout in her studies, maintaining a 3.75 grade point average as a health care management major with a minor in accounting. In addition to her volunteer work, Serley was named to the Senior CLASS Award Watch List earlier this fall.
Serley has been named to the Conference USA All-Academic Team twice and the league's commissioner's honor roll on multiple occasions.
On the court, Serley has reached some impressive milestones in her final campaign as a Blazers. The middle blocker recently posted her 500th career block, becoming just the third player in program history to reach that milestone. Serley is also only the ninth student-athlete in Conference USA volleyball lore to reach 500 swats.
Serley also recorded her 1,000th career kill on Sept. 8 at South Carolina and is only the second player in program history to reach both 1,000 kills and 500 blocks in a career.
The UAB volleyball team is back on the court on Friday, with a trip to Huntington, W.Va. to take on the Marshall Thundering Herd. First serve is set for 6 p.m. CT.
