Gene Bartow started the UAB athletic program from scratch when he arrived in Birmingham in 1977. Bartow served as the Blazers' men's basketball coach until 1996 and the school's athletic director until 2000.
The legendary coach, who amassed more than 600 wins in his 34-year head coaching career, passed away Tuesday after battling cancer for two and a half years.
