BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- UAB senior Jason Shufflebotham has been tabbed the Conference USA Men's Co-Golfer of the Week, league officials announced on Wednesday. Shufflebotham, who shares this week's award with UCF's Brad Schneider, claims his first-ever weekly league honor and UAB's first such accolade since Zack Sucher earned the award for the week of Sept. 24, 2008.
Shufflebotham had a terrific start to his final season as a Blazer, as he shared medalist honors at the Sam Hall Intercollegiate with a career-low 54-hole mark of nine-under par 204 (69-69-66). In capturing the top individual honor, Shufflebotham became the first UAB golfer to earn medalist honors in a tournament since Sucher captured the 2008 Shoal Creek Intercollegiate.
Shufflebotham helped UAB capture its first team tournament title since winning the 2008 C-USA Championship.
During the two-day tournament, Shufflebotham, a native of Prestatyn, Wales, set an 18-hole career-low of five-under par 66 on Tuesday, which came one day after setting his 36-hole low mark of 138. Additionally, his 54-hole mark tied for the 10th-lowest tournament score by a UAB golfer in program history and topped his previous best tournament mark of 212, set at the 2011 Duck Invitational, by eight strokes.
Shufflebotham and the Blazers will waste no time returning to the links as they travel to Monterey, Calif. to compete at the St. Mary's Invitational on Monday and Tuesday of next week. Live stats can be found by going to Golfstat.com.
