MACON, Ga. - UAB senior forward Babayele Sodade recorded a goal and an assist for the second consecutive game to lead the men's soccer team past Mercer, 2-0, on Thursday night. With the victory, the Blazers remain undefeated, moving to 2-0 on the year, while the Bears fall to 0-1-1.
"Overall, I felt that we didn't play our best game, but we did enough to get the victory," Getman said. "I'm happy to score two goals in a road game, that we got a shutout and we gave them very few chances to score. Mercer made it difficult on us at points and they are a good team. The more we play, the more experience and more comfortable our new guys have in our system, so we'll certainly take the result."
Sodade scored his second game-winning tally in as many games, as the preseason all-conference honoree converted a penalty kick just 2:28 into the contest for the early 1-0 lead. The penalty kick was set up by some nifty passing between Sodade and Diego Navarrete, who was fouled in the box to set up the opportunity.
The score would remain that way until the 87:13 mark when senior midfielder Chris Williams put the game out of reach. Williams corralled a rebound attempt off a shot from Sodade, who was credited with the assist, and slid in an easy shot to result in the final score.
Senior goalkeeper Carl Woszczynski again played strong in the net for UAB. The reigning C-USA Defensive Player of the Week made four saves en route to the shutout victory. It marked Woszczynski's 12th shutout of his career, moving him into a tie for fourth on the school's all-time list alongside former standout keeper A.J. Robles.
The Blazers finished with a 16-12 advantage in shots and a 5-2 edge in corner kicks.
UAB will return to the pitch on Sunday night when it hosts the UIC Flames at 7 p.m. at West Campus Field. Admission is free to all UAB students with a valid ID. Students are encouraged to attend a pregame tailgate with free food and drinks beginning approximately 90 minutes prior to the start of the match.
