Cape Is First Academic All-American For UAB Women's Tennis

Complete Academic All-America Women's At-Large Teams 
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Add Academic All-American to the growing list of accomplishments for UAB women's tennis player and recent graduate Jenny Cape.
The Oakville, Ontario, Canada, product was named to the 2011 Capital One Academic All-America Women's At-Large Second Team on Thursday, as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Cape becomes the first UAB women's tennis player ever to earn Academic All-America honors and the first Blazer student-athlete to receive the recognition since women's soccer player Danielle Blair in 2009.
Cape graduated Summa Cum Laude in May with a 4.0 GPA and departmental honors as a biology major and chemistry minor. She was recently named to the Conference USA All-Academic Team for the third year in a row and the Capital One Academic All-District First Team for the second straight year, qualifying her for the Academic All-America voting.
"We're all proud of Jenny for how hard she has worked over the past four years," UAB head coach Krissy Hall said. "It's hard to play a sport in college and maintain a perfect GPA. Jenny had a successful career on the tennis court and was also very committed to academics. She has a bright future ahead of her."
A UAB Dean's List honoree in every semester and a four-time recipient of the C-USA Commissioner's Academic Medal, Cape studied in the Science and Technology Honors Program at UAB. She also served as secretary of the Blazers' Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.
On the court, Cape finished the 2010-11 season with the best singles record on the UAB team at 24-12, including a 12-6 mark this spring in dual matches. She wrapped up her career with 67 career singles victories, including 39 in dual-match play.
Cape's selection marks the 17th time a UAB Student-Athlete has been named an Academic All-American by CoSIDA and the 44th time a Blazer has earned Academic All-America recognition from any organization.
The CoSIDA women's at-large program includes student-athletes from the sports of bowling, crew, fencing, field hockey, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming, tennis and water polo.
