BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- A pair of UAB baseball players were named to the Capital One Academic All-District IV Second Team on Friday.
Pitcher Ryan Woolley and second baseman Keith DePew each earned the recognition as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Woolley, a senior from Montclair, Va., owns a 3.66 GPA as a communication studies major with a management emphasis. He is a two-time recipient of the Conference USA Commissioner's Academic Medal (3.75 GPA or higher) and was recently recognized as having the highest GPA among all graduating male student-athletes at UAB.
A two-time Major League Baseball draft pick, Woolley returned to school both times and is putting up his best numbers this year. The right-hander leads all C-USA pitchers with 81 innings pitched, ranks third in wins with six and checks in fifth in strikeouts with 62. Woolley has tossed two complete games this season and maintains a 3.00 ERA.
DePew, a junior from Trussville, Ala., carries a 3.96 GPA as a high school education major with a history emphasis. A member of the Chi Alpha Sigma National College Athlete Honor Society, DePew has earned UAB Presidential Honors (4.0 GPA) in four semesters and is a three-time C-USA Commissioner's Academic Medal recipient (3.75 GPA or higher).
The Blazers' starting second baseman in all 44 games this season, DePew has committed just one error in 219 chances for a .995 fielding percentage. At the plate, he is hitting .247 with five doubles and three triples. DePew has driven in 19 runs and scored 16.
To be eligible for academic all-district nomination, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 on a scale of 4.0, and have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his current institution. The nominees are then voted on by the members of CoSIDA.
Woolley, DePew and the rest of the UAB baseball team are in Hattiesburg, Miss, this weekend for a three-game C-USA series against 12th-ranked Southern Miss.
