BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- The NCAA released the latest Division I Academic Rates (APR) scores on Tuesday and the report showed that all but three UAB teams have a multi-year rate of 940 or better with nine of the programs scoring 950 or above.
Five Blazer teams (men's basketball, women's golf, softball, women's tennis and volleyball) finished with perfect scores of 1,000 for the 2009-10 year. The women's tennis program earned a Public Recognition Award last week by the NCAA after ranking in the top 10 percent of its sport for the second straight year.
All 16 of UAB's sports earned scores of 950 or better for the 2009-10 year.
"We are extremely pleased with the continued academic progress of our teams and are proud of our student-athletes' accomplishments in the classroom," said UAB Director of Athletics Brian Mackin. "We put a great emphasis on academics and our APR, and the report released today reflects that commitment."
The current APR numbers released by the NCAA Tuesday include data based on the multi-year period from 2006-07 through 2009-10. Every Division I team calculates its APR each academic year based on the eligibility and retention of each scholarship student-athlete.
While the multi-year score of two UAB sports (men's basketball and football) remains below the 925 threshold, both of those sports have made significant progress in the classroom and will not face any NCAA penalties. Men's basketball, due to its demonstrated academic improvement, received a waiver of penalties.
While men's basketball recorded a score of 1,000 for the most recent year in the report, the UAB football program's score improved from 950 in 2008-09 to a mark of 966 for 2009-10.
