BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- UAB pitcher Ryan Woolley and second baseman Keith DePew were announced on Monday as members of the Conference USA All-Academic Team for baseball.
The team, consisting of 11 student-athletes, was selected by a vote of the league's sports directors. To be eligible, players must have at least a 3.2 cumulative grade-point average, be at least a sophomore in class standing and a starter or key reserve for their team.
DePew and Woolley were also recognized earlier this month as members of the Capital One Academic All-District Teams.
In his first year as a full-time starter, DePew has proven himself to be a steady defender at second base. The junior from Trussville, Ala., has started all 54 games and committed just two errors on his way to a .992 fielding percentage. At the plate, he leads C-USA with 14 sacrifice bunts and owns a .258 batting average with 24 RBI.
In the classroom, DePew has maintained a 3.90 GPA as a high school education major with a history emphasis. He has earned UAB Presidential Honors four times during his academic career and has been inducted into both the Chi Alpha Sigma National Collegiate Athlete Honor Society and UAB's chapter of Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society.
Woolley has started 15 games on the mound this spring and logged more innings than any other C-USA pitcher with 99.2. He owns six wins, a 2.98 ERA, 70 strikeouts and is holding opponents to a .228 batting average, ranking in the top 10 in the league in all four categories. The right-hander from Montclair, Va., also has a pair of complete-game victories in conference play.
A communication studies major with a management emphasis, Woolley holds a 3.81 GPA. He is a two-time recipient of the C-USA Commissioner's Academic Medal and owns the highest GPA among all graduating male student-athletes at UAB.
The Blazers joined Marshall, Memphis and Southern Miss as the only schools in the nine-team baseball league to place multiple players on the all-academic team.
UAB (28-26) opens play at the Conference USA Championship presented by Trustmark on Wednesday at 12:30 p.m. CT against Rice at Trustmark Park in Pearl, Miss.
