BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Ben Bullard, who pitched the UAB baseball team to a 7-1 victory Sunday at Tulane, was selected on Monday as the Conference USA Co-Pitcher of the Week.
One of the Blazers' top relievers for the past two years, Bullard made his first career start on Sunday and held the Green Wave to one run on four hits in a career-high seven innings of work. The sophomore right-hander from Decatur, Ala., also struck out a career-best six batters.
After surrendering Tulane's only run of the game in the second inning, Bullard allowed only two Green Wave runners to reach second base over his final five frames. He never faced more than five batters in an inning as he improved to 5-1 on the season and 10-2 in his Blazer career. He also lowered his ERA this year to 3.00.
Bullard's performance helped UAB pick up a key C-USA victory to avoid a road sweep and stay in a tie for fifth place in the league standings at 25-19 (9-9 C-USA), just a game and a half out of second place.
Bullard becomes UAB's third C-USA Pitcher of the Week this season, joining Dillon Napoleon (April 4) and Ryan Woolley (April 11). He shares this week's honor with Jonathan Thompson of Southern Miss, who shut out East Carolina on Saturday.
UAB is off this week for final exams but will return to action Friday with the opener of a three-game conference series at league-leading Southern Miss.
