BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Fresh off a Conference USA series victory over Rice, the UAB baseball team continues its homestand Tuesday with a 6:30 p.m. CT contest against No. 22 Troy at Young Memorial Field.
The Blazers and Trojans will be meeting for the second time in eight days after UAB posted an 8-1 road win last Tuesday at Troy.
UAB (23-17) swept a Saturday doubleheader from No. 19 Rice to secure its fourth series victory in five conference weekends. Counting the previous win over Troy, UAB won three games in four tries last week against teams that have been ranked in the top 20 at some point this season.
The Blazers will send junior left-hander David Hayes (1-2, 5.57 ERA) to the mound on Tuesday for his eighth start of the season. Troy will start sophomore left-hander Shane McCain (1-2, 3.96 ERA) for the second time against the Blazers.
McCain suffered the loss in last week's meeting, while Chase Mallard allowed just one run in six innings to earn the win for the Blazers. Patrick Palmeiro drove in four runs to key the UAB offensive attack.
Palmeiro, John Frost and Keith DePew each posted six RBI over UAB's four games last week, while Coy Arrowood had a breakout week at the plate, hitting .533 (8-for-15) over three starts in the outfield. Five of DePew's six RBI came in the series finale against Rice as he plated the game-tying runs in the fifth inning and the game-winner in the 12th.
Troy (30-10) rebounded from last week's loss to UAB by sweeping a three-game Sun Belt Conference series from Western Kentucky to climb back into the national polls. Adam Bryant continues to pace the Trojans offensively with a .345 batting average, 18 doubles, four home runs and 40 RBI.
Following Tuesday's game with Troy, UAB will remain home for another midweek contest Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. CT against Alabama State before hitting the road this weekend for a conference series at Tulane.
