BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The UAB women's basketball team returns to Bartow Arena to host the annual WBCA Pink ZoneTM game against Tulsa on Thursday. Tipoff between the two teams is slated for 8 p.m. and the game will air on CBS College and CSS with Ann Schatz and Maria Taylor on the call.
UAB leads the series, 7-1. The Blazers have won seven in a row over the Golden Hurricane, including both meetings last season. UAB knocked off Tulsa, 63-55, on Jan. 9, 2010, at Bartow Arena and topped the Golden Hurricane, 52-45, in the opening round of the Conference USA tournament on March 8, 2010, at the Reynolds Center in Tulsa, Okla. UAB is 3-0 against Tulsa at Bartow Arena.
UAB (11-11, 3-6 C-USA) is coming off a 62-56 win at UTEP on Sunday. The Blazers not only earned their first league road win of the season, but it marked the first time in program history UAB had won in El Paso. Senior guard Amanda Peterson led the Blazers with 27 points, including six 3-pointers in the contest.
Peterson is averaging 2.6 treys per game, which is tied for second in C-USA. Her 3.2 average in league games tops C-USA. With Peterson's success from beyond the arc this season, it's no surprise that UAB leads C-USA in 3-pointers per game. UAB averages 6.1 treys per contest, including an average of 6.7 in league games.
The Golden Hurricane brings a 5-12 overall and 1-8 C-USA record into Thursday's contest. Tulsa has lost five in a row, including a 74-58 loss to Memphis in its last outing on Tuesday. The team's only league win of the season came in a 74-71 victory at Southern Miss on Jan. 16.
Tulsa is led by Taleya Mayberry, averaging 15.5 points per game. Mayberry has led the team in scoring in nine contests this season. Loren McDaniel is the team's top rebounder at 6.3 rebounds per game and has produced double-digit rebounding performances in the Golden Hurricane's last two games.
The WBCA Pink ZoneTM initiative is a global, unified effort for the Women's Basketball Coaches Association's (WBCA) to assist in raising breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond.
UAB once again has partnered with the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center to host Thursday's game. Throughout the game, breast cancer survivors will be honored and recognized. Prior to tipoff and during the game, there will be a silent auction on the Bartow Arena concourse featuring many items ideal for the entire family. All proceeds from the silent auction will be donated to the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center's Coach Gene Bartow Fund for Cancer Research, a fund setup in honor of legendary UAB basketball head coach, Gene Bartow.
Doors open at 7 p.m. and the first 1,000 fans will receive a free pink t-shirt and shaker.
