BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The UAB women's basketball team will once again join forces with the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center for the Pink Zone game on Thursday as the Blazers host Tulsa at 8 p.m. CT at Bartow Arena. The game will air on CBS College and CSS.
The WBCA Pink ZoneTM initiative is a global, unified effort for the Women's Basketball Coaches Association's (WBCA) to assist in raising breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond.
"The UAB women's basketball program is proud to once again support the WBCA Pink Zone initiative, " UAB head coach Audra Smith said. "We are always honored to have the opportunity to partner with the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center and hope that, through these continued efforts, we can make a positive impact and raise awareness of breast cancer throughout the Birmingham community."
Throughout the game, breast cancer survivors will be honored and recognized.
Prior to tipoff and during the game, there will be a silent auction on the Bartow Arena concourse featuring many items ideal for the entire family. All proceeds from the silent auction will be donated to the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center's Coach Gene Bartow Fund for Cancer Research, a fund setup in honor of legendary UAB basketball head coach, Gene Bartow.
Last year's auction featured a variety of items for the entire family and raised over $9,000 for cancer research.
"We are incredibly proud of our collaboration with UAB athletics," said Dr. Ed Partridge, UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center Director. "This game is a great way to support ground-breaking breast cancer research, while raising awareness about the disease. We appreciate the dedicated support of UAB athletics in the fight against cancer."
The first 1,000 attending will receive a free pink t-shirt and shaker. For more information, call 975-UAB1 or visit UAB Pink Zone.
