BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The UAB athletic department will recognize a pair of campaign initiatives at Saturday night's Blazer men's basketball game vs. UCF. The Blazer Boosters will present the Alan Ogg Scholarship Fund and the Athletic Legacy Fund during the contest vs. the Knights.
The Alan Ogg Scholarship was created to honor Ogg, a former 7-2 center who was one of coach Gene Bartow's outstanding players at UAB in the late 1980s. He passed away in November, 2009 at the age of 42 after complications from an infection.
"I am very appreciative and touched that UAB has chosen to honor Alan in this way," said Nita Ogg, Alan's widow who will receive a special recognition at the contest. "Alan always had a lot of fond memories of his days at UAB and he remained a loyal supporter of the Blazers his entire life."
Ogg played at UAB from 1986-90. He is still the Blazers' all-time leader in blocked shots with 266 and is third in career field goal percentage (.559). He set a single-game record for UAB with 12 blocks against Florida A&M in 1988.
The Athletic Legacy Fund has been established to honor those individuals who make a planned gift to UAB Athletics of a minimum of $100,000. Vehicles to make a planned gift include wills, life insurance, retirement plans, etc. Gifts can either be restricted for a particular area or unrestricted for the Athletic Director to decide the programs greatest needs.
Donations for the Alan Ogg Memorial Scholarship or Athletic Legacy Fund should be made payable to UAB Athletics with the memo "Alan Ogg Memorial Scholarship" or "Athletic Legacy Fund." Donations can be sent to:
