BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- The UAB men's tennis team will open the 2011 dual match season Saturday when the Blazers play host to UNC Asheville at the Lakeshore Tennis Center. The match is set to start at 1:00 p.m. CT.
After three efforts to begin the season only to have the matches postponed because of inclement weather, UAB is anxious to get on the courts.
The Blazers were originally scheduled to begin the season with a home match on Feb. 1 against North Alabama, but the match was postponed to Feb. 9. UAB was then slated to play matches in Tulsa, Okla. last weekend against the No.35-ranked Golden Hurricane and No. 55 Oklahoma State, but those matches were called off as well.
Then this past Wednesday., the match with UNA was again postponed. The Blazers and Lions are now scheduled to play on Feb. 22.
"It has been frustrating for us," said head coach Derek Tarr, "but we're excited to get out there and play. We have had good practices and we feel like our depth this season will be one of our strengths. UNC Asheville will give us a great test to see where we are at this point."
Unlike the Blazers who have not played a match yet, the Bulldogs will come to Birmingham having played twice already. UNC Asheville is 1-1 so far in duals, having defeated Augusta State on Feb. 4 before being edged by UNC Asheville a day later, 4-3.
Junior Danny Manlow and sophomore David Zimmerman, who both earned spots on the 2010 All-Conference USA team, will lead the Blazers into the 2011 campaign.
