BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- UAB senior goalkeeper Carl Woszczynski was selected to the Conference USA Men's Soccer All-Academic Team, as voted on by the men's soccer SID's from around the league. Woszczynski earns the honor for the second time in his career, as he was tabbed to the all-academic team in 2009.
"I am not surprised that the awards keep rolling in for Carl," UAB head coach Mike Getman said. "He is a great goalkeeper, leader and student. Carl is every definition of the term `student-athlete' and is a great representative of the UAB soccer program, as well as the university."
Woszczynski maintains a current grade point average of 3.41 in mechanical engineering with a minor in business administration. He was named to the C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll in each of the previous four seasons and has been twice named as the UAB Student-Athlete of the Week.
The Columbus, Ind. native, who was selected to the league's second team earlier in the week, set a school record with four C-USA Defensive Player of the Week honors this season. He enters the conference tournament leading the league in shutouts (6) and save percentage (.818) and ranks second in total saves (72) and goals against average (0.86).
Woszczynski anchors a UAB defense, which tops Conference USA in fewest goals allowed (16), goals against average (0.90), shutouts (6) and saves (80).
The 16th-ranked Blazers finished the regular season with a 12-3-3 overall record and a 6-1-1 mark in conference play. UAB also earned a first-round bye and the No. 2 overall seed in the event, which will be played in Tulsa, Okla., starting on Wednesday. The Blazers will not play until Friday's semifinals at 7:30 p.m. CT, when they take on the winner of third-seeded UCF and No. 6 seed Memphis. The championship game is set for Sunday at 1 p.m. and will be televised nationally on CBS Sports Network.
