BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - UAB true freshman Paul Dunne was named as the Conference USA Men's Golfer of the Week, the league office announced on Wednesday. Dunne becomes the third different Blazer to earn the accolade this fall.
Playing at the Hummingbird Intercollegiate, only his fourth tournament in his young career, Dunne closed play in second overall to lead the No. 19 UAB men's golf team to a second-place finish in the 17-team field, which was held on Monday and Tuesday at Cashier, N.C.
Dunne played the best golf in a tournament in his young career at the 36-hole event. In addition to his career-best finish in a tournament, he also carded career-low 18-hole and 36-hole scores.
The Dublin, Ireland native recorded a final round career-best of five-under par 65 on the par 71, 6,767-yard Country Club of Sapphire Valley course. His tournament total of five-under par 137 was also a new personal best, as he finished just two strokes behind individual medalist Kristopher Gray of Gardner-Webb.
He bested his previous mark for 36 holes by nine strokes (146) and beat his 18-hole low mark by five strokes (70), both of which were set at the Saint Mary's Intercollegiate earlier in the season.
Dunne has been a big reason why the Blazers closed out the fall campaign with a record of 59-7 over their five tournaments played (UAB captured the Sam Hall Invitational, while also recording three second-place finishes and a fifth-place result).
Dunne and the Blazer will next be in action at the Gator Invitational on Feb. 11-12 in Gainesville, Fla.
