BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ---- Head coach Brian Shoop and the UAB baseball program announced that Adam Lamar, a left-handed pitcher/outfielder, has signed a National Letter of Intent to play for the Blazers.
Lamar joins Adam Lau and Nick Altobella as part of the 2013 UAB signing class.
“Adam Lamar is the second left-handed pitcher we are adding to our program and we are thrilled he will be joining our baseball family,” Shoop said. “Adam’s brother Jacob played for Coach Josh Hopper at Berry so there was already an existing relationship with the family. Then when Adam attended our summer camp all of the coaches were drawn to him both as a pitcher and has a young man.”
Last spring, Lamar put forth a strong campaign as a junior at Lauderdale County High School en route to being named second team all-state by the Alabama Sports Writers Association (ASWA). He was a key component in helping the Tigers advance to the state semifinals in 2011.
At the plate, Lamar hit at a .392 clip, totaling 69 hits – 24 of which were doubles – while knocking in 48. In fact, his doubles total is tied for sixth most in a season in Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) history.
Lamar was equally, if not more impressive on the mound, finishing last season with an 8-4 record and 1.38 ERA. He recorded 105 strikeouts to just 18 walks in 76.1 innings toeing the rubber for the Tigers.
“We watched Adam pitch numerous times this summer and realized he is a winner,” Shoop said. “He is a strike thrower, which has always been important, but is even more valuable with the new bat standards.
“Adam is a young senior and we believe he will develop physically which will do nothing but add to an already polished presence on the mound. We believe he will throw hard one day which when coupled with his natural movement and ability to change speeds will make him very successful at the college level. Some guys just have the innate ability to miss barrels and get outs, which describes Adam Lamar perfectly.”
The Rogersville, Ala. native was also named a first team all-area selection by The (Florence) Times Daily and selected to play in the 2011 AHSAA North vs. South All-Star game.
“Adam has played for Trent Patterson at Lauderdale High School and in the summer has played for Corey Looney with Decatur Post 15 and Chris Smith with the Green Wave, so he has competed at a high level and has been extremely successful for each of these programs,” Shoop said. “He will be successful at UAB as well.”
Now entering his final year at Lauderdale County, Lamar will enroll at UAB for the 2012-13 academic year and compete for the Blazers baseball team in the 2013 season.
“Adam is another fantastic young man who has been raised in a strong family. In every way Adam fits the mold we want in a UAB baseball player,” Shoop said.
