BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ---- The UAB volleyball team featured a 19-dig effort from libero Heather Thomas, but the Southern Miss Golden Eagles earned the 3-0 (19-25, 20-25, 16-25) sweep on Friday night inside Bartow Arena.
The loss drops the Blazers to 20-8 overall and 10-6 in Conference USA, while the Golden Eagles even up their season and league record (14-14, 8-8 C-USA).
UAB struggled to find consistency on offense, hitting just .142 as a team, while Southern Miss was firing on all cylinders on the attacking end. The Golden Eagles finished the night with a team hitting percentage of .258 and featured four players with eight-or-more kills, led by Ashley Mell's 13.
As a team Southern Miss put away 49 kills to just 34 for UAB, while also holding the edge in digs, 67 to 56. Both teams tallied seven blocks each.
Sam Serley paced the UAB attack with nine kills and added three block assists, while Kiriana Hirini hit .444 for the match (4K-0E-9TA). Setter Alison Woods just missed a double-double, dishing out 22 assists and posting nine digs in a losing effort.
For the Golden Eagles, Kelsea Seymour posted a double-double with a match-best 42 assists along with 10 digs, while libero Lisa Knecht topped the contest with 23 digs.
UAB is back at Bartow Arena on Sunday with a match against the Tulane Green Wave slated for 1 p.m. The contest will serve as Senior Day for both Thomas and Thais Soares.
