BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ---- The UAB football team spent around two hours in full pads on Tuesday morning gearing up for the Houston Cougars, ranked 14th in the nation, at the football practice fields on campus.
The two squads will meet on Saturday at Legion Field with kickoff set for 6 p.m. CT as the game will serve as Homecoming for Blazer fans. CBS Sports Network will televise the game with Dave Ryan (play-by-play) and Rich Rodriguez (color) on the call.
The Blazers (1-7, 1-4 C-USA) look to rebound after a tough 59-14 defeat at Marshall last Saturday, while No. 14 Houston (8-0, 4-0 C-USA) last played on Oct. 27, earning a 73-34 victory against Rice.
UAB, which owns a 4-3 edge in the all-time series, will need contributions from all facets of the team to contain the UH offense. The Cougars rank first nationally in total offense (612.4), passing offense (453.3) and scoring offense (52.3) this season.
"It has to be a team effort," head coach Neil Callaway said. "The defense obviously has to do its part and all phases of our team have to step up and do their job and not give them anything cheap."
During Tuesday's practice, Callaway was pleased with his team's efforts in 11-on-11 drills and also stated how UH's defense is much improved from previous seasons.
"Houston has better personnel [this season] and is doing a better job on assignments and fundamentals," Callaway said. "They are a lot better than they have been in years past."
