BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The UAB women's basketball team was picked sixth by the Conference USA coaches in the league's preseason poll announced Thursday.
The Blazers are coming off a 20-15 season, including four straight victories to close the 2010-11 campaign as champions of the Women's Basketball Invitational (WBI). UAB returns nine letterwinners and five players with significant starting experience.
Memphis was tabbed as the favorite in the preseason poll, followed by Rice, UCF and Tulane, all of which received at least one first-place vote. Houston, which returns just one starter from a team that went unbeaten in league play last year, was picked to finish seventh.
The C-USA coaches voted Brittany Carter of Memphis as the conference's preseason player of the year.
UAB began practice on Monday as it works toward its Nov. 11 season opener at Chattanooga in the Preseason WNIT. The Blazers will play one exhibition contest, hosting UAH on Nov. 4 at Bartow Arena.
