BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Fresh off a fifth-place result at the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate, which featured some of the top talent in the country, UAB is ranked as one of the top 15 men's golf teams in the nation, according to the most recent Golfstat.com top-25 rankings. The Blazers checked in at No. 13 in the nation this week after debuting last week at No. 8 among all Division I teams in last week's poll.
Additionally, UAB boasts a pair of golfers who are ranked among the top 60 individuals in the nation. Senior Jason Shufflebotham, who captured the individual medalist honor at the Sam Hall Intercollegaite and has three top-15 results in three tournaments this year, is ranked No. 29 in the country, while sophomore Thomas Sutton is ranked No. 57 nationally.
The Blazers are coming off a solid showing at the star-studded Jerry Pate, in which they topped 11th-ranked UNLV, as well as No. 36 SMU and No. 49 Mississippi State. The JPNI also featured No. 3 Texas, No. 7 Auburn, No. 8 Alabama and No. 10 Clemson among the 12-team field.
In UAB's two previous tournaments, it captured the Sam Hall Intercollegiate team title on Sept 13 with a 16-under par 836. The following weekend, UAB placed second overall at the Saint Mary's Intercollegiate in Monterey, Calif.
On the strength of the three tournaments they have competed in this season, the Blazers have a rating of 86.501% in the Golfstat ranking. Golfstat takes into account numerous statistical data and ranks teams based on potential head-to-head competition.
UAB is one of four Conference USA squads to be ranked among the top 40 in the country, joining UCF (No. 6), Tulsa (No. 27) and SMU.
UAB will next be in action on Oct. 17-18 when it travels to Kiawah Island, S.C. to participate at the Invitational at the Ocean Course.
