ORLANDO, Fla. -- The UAB women's soccer team fell 1-0 to No. 20 UCF on Friday night at the UCF Soccer Stadium. With the loss, the Blazers fall to 5-10-1 overall and 2-5-1 in C-USA action, while the Knights improve to 10-2-5 on the season and 5-1-3 in league play.
UCF came out strong, peppering UAB keeper CJ Winship with 13 shots in the first 45 minutes. Winship made five saves in the first half, but one slipped passed her in the 22nd minute.
"UCF is a solid team. We started off slow in the first half and picked up the pace in the second half," UAB head coach Harold Warren said. "We kept the ball well in the second half, worked hard and created a few good opportunities, but we fell short."
Forward Nicolette Radovcic passed to midfielder Stacie Hubbard who launched the ball from nearly 30 yards out and into the top shelf of the goal.
The Blazers almost tallied the equalizer with close to two minutes remaining in the first half. From 20 yards out, Johanna Liney served the ball across the mouth of the goal and into traffic. Emma Smith was in position to capitalize on the pass, but could not find the back of the net.
Winship made seven stops for the Blazers. The Knights held a 16-6 shot advantage and the teams each tallied four corner kicks.
UAB returns to action on Sunday afternoon against Southern Miss in Hattiesburg, Miss. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. CT.
