BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- UAB sophomore Sam Love has been tabbed the Conference USA Men's Co-Golfer of the Week, league officials announced on Wednesday. Love, who shares this week's award with East Carolina's Harold Varner and Rice's Jeff Wibawa, claims his first-ever weekly league honor and the is the second Blazer to earn the award this season (Jason Shufflebotham - Sept. 14).
Love claimed medalist honors, defeating seven golfers rated in GolfStat.com's top 100, with a career-best 54-hole score of seven-under par 209 (70-69-70) at the Invitational at The Ocean Course on Monday and Tuesday. It marked his first medalist honor as a collegiate player.
Love entered the final 18 holes in second overall following a career-best 36-hole score of 139 on Monday. The Trussville, Ala. native started off Tuesday's round a little shaky with a two-over par through his front nine. However, he carded four birdies and no bogeys over the back nine, including birdies on holes 16 and 17, to vault into the overall lead with a two-under par 70. He won the individual title by two strokes.
Love's 54-hole score of 209 topped his former career-best 54-hole score of 214, set earlier this season at the Saint Mary's Intercollegiate. Love's performance helped the Blazers rally to a second-place result for the third time in four tournaments this year.
The Blazers will return to action in their final tournament of the fall season when they travel to Cashier, N.C. to compete at the Hummingbird Invitational, hosted by Western Carolina, on Oct. 31-Nov. 1.
