BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- CJ Winship, a redshirt freshman goalkeeper on UAB’s women’s soccer team, was selected as the Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced on Monday. The award marks the first in Winship’s career as well as the first weekly honor garnered by the Blazers in 2011.
“CJ had a strong weekend in goal for us,” UAB head coach Harold Warren said. “She made some very good saves and was the difference in the game.”
Winship put on an outstanding show in the net over the weekend posting two shutouts to lead the Blazers to 1-0 victories against conference opponents Colorado College and UTEP. Winship played a key role, making numerous diving saves to preserve UAB’s lead in the matches.
In Colorado College’s first conference loss of the season, the Tigers nearly notched the equalizer on a string of one-touch passes, but Winship came out of the goal and dove to her left to save the ball as the shot was fired.
The Ridgeland, Miss. native faced 22 shots, 11 locked on target, as she played all 180 minutes. She made 10 saves on the weekend including another standout stop when UTEP’s Mackenzie German ripped a free kick through traffic toward the opposite corner of the goal. Winship dove to her left, completely out-stretched, and batted the ball away.
Winship and the Blazers will return to action on Friday when they travel to Orlando, Fla. to take on UCF. Kickoff is slated for 6 p.m. CT.
