BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Fresh off its first Conference USA victory of the season, the UAB women's basketball team looks to make it two in a row when it hosts Houston Thursday. Tipoff between the Blazers and Cougars is slated for 7 p.m.
The series is even at 10-10. Although Houston has won seven of the last nine meetings, UAB captured a 70-65 win in the most recent meeting on March 10, 2010, in the semifinals of the C-USA Championship in Tulsa, Okla. The Cougars edged the Blazers, 63-62, during the regular season last year in Birmingham. UAB is 5-4 against Houston in Bartow Arena, but the Blazers have dropped the last four contests to the Cougars at home.
UAB (9-8, 1-3 C-USA) is coming off a 65-58 win over Memphis on Sunday. UAB currently tops C-USA, allowing just 57.9 points per game. The Blazers also rank 48th nationally in turnover margin (3.4) and 68th in turnovers per game (16.2).
Sophomore guard Amber Jones leads the Blazers with 10.4 points per game, while junior center Meagan Brown has been the team's top rebounder at 5.6 boards per game. Senior guard Amanda Peterson continues to shatter the school's 3-point record, currently with 255 in her career.
The Cougars remain undefeated in C-USA at 4-0 and are 13-4 overall. Houston has won five of its last six and became the first C-USA team this season to knock off a ranked opponent when the Cougars defeated No. 21 Nebraska, 79-70, on Dec. 18.
Reigning C-USA Player of the Year Courtney Taylor leads the Cougars with 16.4 points and 11.6 rebounds per game. Brittney Scott (15.6 ppg), Porsche Landry (15.6 ppg) and Lesslee Mason (10.1 ppg) also are averaging double-digit scoring for Houston. Scott tops the team in 3-point shooting, hitting 41.7 percent from beyond the arc.
